Here's what's happening in October

10 Friday Mother Goose Storytime. Take part from 10:30-11 a.m. in Karen's Kids Room at the Sandpoint Library, 1407 Cedar St. It's a rhythm-filled lap-sit storytime held on Friday mornings, geared for children up to 36-months.

11 Reg. Deadline: Mosaic Art with Cheryl Klein. In this 3-hour class, students will create an original 9x6” mosaic on slate using the direct application method. Tesserae for the design will include a variety of stained glass, pottery, tile, stone, beads, and gems. Nipping and shaping techniques will be presented as well as basic concepts in color and composition. Class will be held on Oct. 17 from 9 a.m. to noon. $36. 14 Tuesday Teen Sandpoint Content Creators. 14 Reg. Deadline: The Art of Inner Expression with Alison Barrows-Young. Mindfulness practices in drawing, mixed-media, collage, mono printing, and the study of design. This inspiring mixed media course invites you to explore mindful practices that enrich your personal journey of expressive discovery through innovative mixed media processes and design topics. It nurtures a spirit of experimentation, empowering you with the skills and knowledge to craft a diverse array of unique and expressive works. Minimalism and exaggeration and a variety of levels of detail are also considerations. In this abstract class, students will explore personal expression through abstract form. You will dance, move to some fun beats, and learn some new ways to exercise your body.

16 Dispelling the Myths of Farragut. Local historian Dr. Ken Conger presents "Dispelling the Myths of Farragut," a lively talk separating fact from fiction about Farragut's World War II history. Were there really secret submarines in Lake Pend Oreille, or officer homes still standing today? With humor and solid research, Dr. Conger uncovers the truth behind the stories. 16 Panida Annual Membership Meeting. The Panida, 300 N. First Ave., will be hosting its Annual Community Membership Meeting at 6:00 p.m. at the Panida's main theater. The Annual meeting is the chance to bring together and thank the Panida Board, its amazing volunteers and the community, all of which through their hard work and dedication makes the community run theater possible. The Panida will also be holding the annual Board Election, in which each candidate will be given the opportunity to make a brief speech about why they are running for the board, what their background and qualifications are and how they will be beneficial to the theater.

16 Reg. Deadline: Make a Memory Bear with Michelle Sebern & Lorna Holt. Join in and crate a memory bear, a special way to turn cherished memories into a thoughtfully handcrafted keepsake. In this class you will learn how to deconstruct articles of clothing, prepare fabric, and cut the necessary pieces, sew the individual bear parts, assemble your bear, and bring it to life. Each class will include a bit of homework to help students complete the steps and be ready for the next session. By the end of the course, each participant will leave with their own handcrafted memory bear, made from meaningful fabrics that hold personal significance. 17 Put Your Garden To Bed. At 4 p.m. in the Library Garden, 1407 Cedar St. learn what your garden needs this time of year, tips for improving garden health, perennial care, and making spring easier.

17 Reg. Deadline: Wonderful Weaving with Jan Rust. This class is designed to give all beginning weavers an opportunity to create a textured wall hanging using a simple frame loom.  They will use traditional and contemporary weaving stitches to create a sampler of their own design. Experienced weavers will be able to enhance their design skills and create a wall hanging that is brimming with texture and movement. When students complete this course, they will be able to design and create future weavings with increased creativity and confidence. 18 KNPS October Program: Caribbean Coral Reef Restoration Project by SHS Students. Join at the Sandpoint Library, 1407 Cedar St. for a 9:30 a.m. social time and 10 a.m. program. Since 2019, now retired environmental science teacher John Hastings has been organizing groups of Sandpoint High School students to lend hands-on support to coral reef restoration efforts in the Dominican Republic. John will make a dynamic presentation of the importance of the work being done to ensure reef survival and highlight the students' contributions. Learn how this program is truly making a difference for threatened reefs and marine environments, for Caribbean communities and for the young people themselves. John is a KNPS board member, an advanced certified diver, and with his wife, Nancy, owner of All Seasons Garden and Floral.

Candidates include incumbents Joel Aispuro and Rick Howarth, and challengers Joshua Torrez (listed on the ballot as Torrez Joshua) and Joe Tate. Each will share their background, qualifications, and reasons for running, followed by city representatives discussing ballot measures and a session of moderated audience questions. 31 Annual Halloween Warming Station. Christ our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1900 Pine St., will be hosting a warming station. The parking lot and grounds will be open. There will be covered areas and several firepits going to help people stay warm and dry. Additionally, there will be mac & cheese and hot chocolate. Starting at 4:15 p.m.

1 Dala Horse Carving. Learn the art of wood carving by creating a traditional Swedish Dala horse, the colorful carved toy that has become a beloved national symbol of Sweden. In this hands-on class, you'll shape and smooth a rough-cut horse figure with a carving knife, practicing basic techniques while crafting a keepsake that makes a wonderful gift or holiday decoration. All tools, including a safety glove, are provided, and no prior experience is needed. The workshop takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kaniksu Sled Barn in Dover, 11735 W. Pine St. Cost is $35. 8 Reg. Deadline: Kimekomi with Jenni Barry. Kimekomi is a Japanese art form where fabric pieces are tucked into a base.  In this class students will be creating 2-D Kimekomi art that combines the painterly quality of impressionism, with complex quilting. We will begin by drawing a 'stained-glass' style design on foam core. Students will cover basic cutting techniques for the foam, then cutting and tucking techniques for the fabric. 15 Pine Needle Basketry. Learn the traditional art of coil basketry in this beginner-friendly class led by Brianna Larson. Using locally harvested pine needles, students will wrap, coil, and stitch together a small trinket basket while learning skills that can grow into a lifelong craft. Open to all ages (children 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult), this hands-on workshop takes place from 1–5 p.m. at the Kaniksu Sled Barn, 11735 W. Pine St. in Dover. 17 Missoula Children's Theater Auditions: Alice in Wonderland. Audition will be held at the Forrest Bird Charter School from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Those auditioning should arrive at 3:15 p.m. and plan to stay for the full two hours. Some of the cast members will be asked to stay for a rehearsal immediately following the audition. Approximately 50-60 roles are available for local students. All students, grades K-12, are encouraged to audition. No advance preparation is necessary. Most students rehearse approximately 4 hours and 15 minutes each day, Monday through Friday. 22 Triangle Dinner Bell. Join instructor Nick Belfry from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Kaniksu Sled Barn, 11735 West Pine Street, Dover, for a hands-on class where you'll create a rustic chime, the perfect Christmas gift for the chef in your life. Learn techniques like designing, bending, tapering, twisting, and scrolling while enjoying a fun, creative atmosphere filled with stories of camping trips and favorite meals. 22 Gnome Carving. Learn the Scandinavian art of flat plane figure carving in this hands-on class with instructor Shaun Deller. Join from 1:00–5:00 pm at the Kaniksu Sled Barn, 11735 West Pine Street, Dover. Participants will carve and paint their own little wooden gnome using just one knife, exploring a traditional style where flat facets define the form. 27 Reg. Deadline: Macrame Plant Hanger with Sadey Vogel. Macrame is back! In this class, students will learn 3 basic knots. Students will use a wooden ring, cotton cord and these knots to help create a decorative plant hanger perfect for any corner of their home. Class will be held on Dec. 3 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. $36.
